POINTERS TO FUTURE

Expansion in major metros planned

A new entrant to the Silver Club, Best IT World (BITW) at 20th rank, is just one notch below Rashi Peripherals, from whom it broke away in AMJ 2000. The strategic relationship with Rashi continues but BITW has ensured that it stands firmly on its own legs.

The result is a turnover of Rs 93 crore achieved initially by selling every IT product that it could lay its hands on. But around the middle of last fiscal, this strategy was changed.

BITW wanted to become a distributor instead of a mere trader. "To achieve this objective," says Sandeep Parasrampuria, Director, "we signed up with Acer as their regional distributor and Lanbit as national distributor."

Steps were taken to find a firm footing in the service business as well. A new division, The Edge, was created to cater to the service needs of partners. This measure also helped BITW in becoming authorized service providers (ASP) for vendors.

Acer has already signed BITW as its ASP. More sign-ups are expected during the current fiscal especially in the printer segment.

BITW has established its presence in 20 districts of Maharashtra where it has its most preferred partners. The company opened its first office outside the state at Indore in March 2001. It has the ambition to go national by opening at least an office each in all the four regions in the near future.

Margins were under tremendous pressure for BITW just like any other partner. What made the situation even acute were the big-ticket schemes of vendors in which partners invested their money without applying their minds. As a result, cash flows suffered, adversely affecting the

business.

The revenue from The Edge was miniscule during 2000-01 mainly because the division was newly created. Sandeep expects Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore in the current fiscal from services

business.

Sandeep is looking for a turnover of Rs 125 crore in this fiscal. Says he, "This projection, no doubt, is on the higher side. Going by the current market conditions, the final figure could be anywhere between Rs 115 crore and Rs 125

crore."

What could help BITW to reach this revenue figure is iBrain, the motherboard brand that it has launched in collaboration with Jaydee Electronics headed by Hitesh Mody. BITW gives a 400-day warranty period for the motherboard as well as instant replacement.
