Chipmaker Cirrus Logic said it earned a profit of US $3.7 million in its fiscal fourth quarter. The company also announced that it is moving its operations, including headquarters, from Fremont, Silicon Valley, to Austin, Texas.

Cirrus Logic has been struggling for almost four years after a meteoric growth earlier in the 1990s. Sales in the fourth quarter rose to US $ 160.2 million from US $ 127.4 million in the same quarter last year. David French, Cirrus’ chief executive officer said the results are encouraging. “We have now logged three consecutive quarters of increasing revenues and profit improvement,” he says.

The company’s move to Austin is highly unusual. While most of Silicon Valley’s high-tech firms establish manufacturing, service and other operations outside Silicon Valley, due to the high cost of operating there, most maintain corporate headquarters and engineering in the Valley, which continues to offer a pool of ultra-skilled high-tech engineers and marketing experts.
