STRENGTHS
l Very low manpower turnover rate
l Good start in mobile phones with Motorola, contributing Rs 25 crore
WEAKNESS
l Needs to build its presence in southern region
l Has very few brands to offer

Iris Computers posted revenues of Rs 277 crore in 2003-04, registering a quantum jump of 40% over the previous fiscal's Rs 200 crore. Rs 25 crore came from its Motorola mobile phone distribution in North India.

The company ventured into tape and automation after it became fourth distributor of HP. It also signed up BenQ for its TFT monitors. It also lined up some lifestyle products, to sustain its growth rates. Now the company wants to round off its product portfolio by adding some software brands in it as well.

In the previous fiscal, the company continued to enhance reach in B and C class. The numbers also made Iris the largest distributor for HP PCs in the north. With PC distribution margins under constant pressure, Iris tied up with IBM for the distribution of IBM's HP-compatible printer consumables. It was adjudged the best IBM distributor in India.

Iris also engaged with end-user for creating more demand for its principals, though these were fulfilled by its partners. One such order was from an animation company named DQ Entertainment, which called for a supply of 70 servers. Iris received a repeat order from this very customer for another 40 servers.

Iris claims that its flexibility towards customers differentiates it from other distributors and has resulted in its growth. Its outlets are open from 9 am to 9 pm, seven days a week, so that partners can get instant delivery. Also, it claims that partners can just sign a handwritten deal and do business with them.

Apart from its distribution business, Iris has several other divisions. This includes Domain 2000 Singapore, Iris Unified Learning, which provides training to corporates and Iris Care for hardware support.

Last fiscal, Iris came up with several reseller schemes wherein partners were given a Philips projector and a Maruti car on PC sales worth Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore, respectively. On PCs sales of Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 2 crore, they were awarded a Santro and a Ford Ikon, respectively. Iris Computers also undertook the challenge of appointing 100 additional retailers in C-class cities, to strengthen its existing channel network of 900 partners.

Recently, Iris Computers was appointed as the national distributor for IBM's toner cartridges. It was also signed on as the fourth national distributor for HP storage products.
