Chennai-based Gemini Communication is acquiring an American company, PointRed Technologies, to become South Asia's largest broadband wireless access company. The acquisition of PointRed to the tune of $ 9 million, which has been funded by Acer Technology Venture America, will be completed in the next 30 days.

Gemini would be the first Indian company to acquire a Silicon Valley-based wireless company, said its Chairman Vijay Kumar. With this acquisition, the company aims for a sizable pie in the international markets in the wireless space.

Through its recent initiative, Gemini has entered into discussions with PointRed to acquire the company. Gemini and PointRed have already entered into a MoU in this regard. PointRed manufactures and designs technology products to deliver broadband wireless access across the world.

In a telephonic conversation with CyberMedia News, Balaji Kulothungan, Head of Gemini's Wireless Division and the CEO, said that PointRed would be 100 % owned subsidiary of Gemini after the acquisition. “These assets include Intellectual Properties owned by PointRed, a hardware manufacturing facility in Taiwan apart from the software division in US and India,” he further said.

“Over the years Gemini Communication has been selling products of other companies. Through this acquisition, we will now be promoting our own brand and this will enable us to access the international markets in a shorter span of time in the wireless technology space. We plan to acquire 5 per cent of the international market in the next 12 months,” Balaji said.

“Gemini Communication is one of the largest networking companies in India,” he said adding that it has proven expertise to deliver complex turnkey solutions and it also offers technology solutions with partnerships from leading technology companies around the world in LAN / WAN Division, Computer Telephony Integration (CTI), NetworkCARE Services, NetworkCARE Products, Wireless & Telecom and RFID.

Gemini has experience in the banking, insurance, stock exchange, pharmaceuticals, trading and distribution, manufacturing & processing, retailing, telecommunication and in the transportation sectors. Some of its major clients include VSNL, MTNL, TNEB, Airtel, NIC, Idea cellular and BSNL.
