Microsoft has pulled up its sleeves against all those involved in piracy and counterfeiting of its software. In an attempt to curb piracy, the Anti-Piracy Cell of Microsoft has been gathering information on reseller indulging in piracy. After thorough investigation the department recently passed information of five resellers indulging in piracy in Mumbai. This information was passed on to the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police.

Following which, the Anti-Piracy Cell - a social service branch of the Mumbai Police department - raided premises of five resellers in Mumbai and seized pirated copies of Microsoft Windows.

The five resellers arrested are Image Technology (located in Mumbai Central), Plug In and Mark Infotech (Lamington Road), Software India (Goregaon) and one at Kandivali.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dr. Sanjay Aparanti, who initiated the procedures, said, "We were informed about five IT products resellers selling pirated copies of Microsoft Windows at different locations and hence, we formed five different teams to nab the culprits."

Based on the information received from Microsoft, the raids were conducted and the culprits were booked under IPC 420 and under copyright act 51.63. They have been accused of selling fake copies of Microsoft Windows as original and possession of duplicate software.

As per the information provided by the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Cell, the counterfeit copies seized are worth Rs 8,56,000.

The accused in police custody are: Harish Shah, Dilip Jain, Mahindra Mutha, Vasant Agarwal and Sandip Zamindar. The case is under investigation under Senior Police Inspector Agarkar of Anti Piracy Cell, Social Service Branch and DCP Sanjay Aparanti.
