NEW DELHI
JANUARY 18, 2007

EMC Computer System (EMC), a company within the EMC Corporation group of companies, and Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), an organization established under the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India announced that they have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance the overall security of the computing environment in the country. The MOU was signed by Steve Leonard, Sr VP, EMC Corporation and Dr Gulshan Rai, Director, CERT-In in the presence of MM Nambiar, Additional Secretary, Department of Information Technology, Government of India.

As a part of the MOU, both EMC and CERT-In have identified a common goal to work together to address the increasingly complex problems associated with computer security and computer-related crime in India. The scope of the MOU includes technical co-operation and information exchange, knowledge sharing, emergency response and coordination, executive information exchange and training as well as customer education and outreach.

Commenting on the association, Dr. Gulshan Rai, Director, CERT-In, said, "Governments, businesses and consumers across the country are increasingly faced with cyber threats and there is a clear need to improve computer security readiness and raise awareness around the importance of keeping systems secure, software up to date and adopting appropriate security practices and procedures. We have always encouraged support from technology leaders like EMC, who has the expertise and experience to combat hostile information security situations."

"We are confident that the association will go a long way in improving the cyber security in the country," he further added.

Elaborating on the significance of the MOU with CERT-In, Steve said, "EMC is committed to help organizations around the world and in India secure their information which is their most critical asset. The MOU is a significant step forward in this direction. Both EMC and Cert-In recognize that along with the benefits of increased computer connectivity, there are a host of new risks with computer hackers exploiting the vulnerabilities in the software and computer system."

"We are happy to extend our expertise in information infrastructure to enable organizations across India combat security threats such as unauthorized access, phising and other cyber crimes." He further added.
