NASSCOM 2001 was flagged off on 7th February by the minister of IT, Pramod Mahajan and Maharashtra's CM Vilasrao Deshmukh at Mumbai. Speaking at the inauguration Mahajan mentioned that the ministry of IT would introduce the Communications Bill in the current budget session in the parliament. But he cautioned that the bill would be passed only in the winter session. "Once the bill is passed, we would be able to formulate a globally competitive framework to allow India to tap the latent potential in the telecom and broadcasting space," he added.

Arun Netravalli, CEO, Bell Labs who was recently awarded the Padma Bhushan delivered the inaugural keynote. In his address Netravalli emphasized on India's need to gear up to challenges. "We should keep our global position in place by cashing in on new emerging areas," he said.

Talking about the US slowdown on IT spending, NASSCOM chairman Phiroz Vandrevala was confident that it would not adversely affect India's offshore business opportunities. "The future will open up new domain areas where Indian companies can compete, including embedded systems, m-commerce applications and IT-enabled services," he said.

NASSCOM 2001 has five key events - the international IT exhibition, conferences on emerging technologies, venture capital forums and the e-summit cyber conference. Besides this there will be Visa Clinics and business workshops where officers from various countries will conduct exclusive workshops on visa processes, green card applications and work permit guidelines.
