Advantage Computers (Adcom), which launched its first WLAN product earlier
this month, is now in the process of appointing regional distributors for its
new range of products. Adcom's new radio modem connects two or more offices at a
distance of five km and works on 2.4 GHz frequency at a bandwidth of 11Mbps.
This product is also in tune with the recent government decision of delicensing
the 2.4 GHz spectrum in LAN and campus networks.
According to Adcom officials, the product has been designed keeping in mind
channel anxieties on factors such as noise, wind, high electric wires and
concrete structures to set up a wireless network.
"There are 13 inbuilt channels which avoid such interferences. Another
area of concern for the channel is security. This has also been taken care of as
there are security provisions in the product," said Manish Garg, Manager
(Network Division), Adcom.
The product along with the installation tower and antennas costs Rs 1.7 lakh,
while other similar wireless products cost up to Rs 4.5 lakh. It also comes with
a one-year warranty. Adcom is now setting up a channel network for this new
product range. "A new distribution channel with thorough knowledge of the
product and the capability to provide after sales services was essential.
Therefore, one distributor will be appointed in every state and thereafter a
number of solution providers will also be appointed," Garg said.
This is the first time Adcom has adopted the regional distribution model.
"It was necessary to take up this model essentially to penetrate the
market. The regional distributor will be the best person to analyze and appoint
solution providers. There has, however, been no decision on the number of
solution providers," Garg added.
Adcom sources added that a specialized channel was required for wireless
products since they involved concept selling rather than box promotion. The
target segments would be mainly cable operators providing Internet connections,
Internet service providers (ISPs) and corporations. By the next quarter, Adcom
hopes to launch its next wireless product at a range of 25 km.
