The total APAC broadband access service market is expected to reach a subscriber population of 235.84 million by 2011, up from 86.63 million in 2005, representing a CAGR of 18.2 percent, according to an In-Stat study. The growth is expected to mainly stem from developing markets such as China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, the study titled 'Asia Pacific Broadband Access Services Market: The Continuing Excitement,' said.

The broadband access services market revenue was valued at $20.7 billion in 2005 and is expected to reach $55.1 billion by 2011. Tier-1 markets Japan and South Korea contributed more than 60 percent of total revenue in 2005. The tier-two markets of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and Singapore, contributed around 15 percent.

“In less developed markets like China and India, broadband access services are expected to demonstrate impressive growth through 2011, and constitute the bulk of Asia Pacific's broadband subscriber expansion,” says Bryan Wang, In-Stat analyst.

“Wide availability of low prices in cyber cafes in these markets is allowing people to experience broadband services without a fixed charge, which will stimulate potential new subscriptions,” he added. The study also said that compelling content, or 'killer broadband applications' will be the key to success in the long run.
