DBTEL Inc, the mobile handset maker in China, has entered the Indian cellphone market to tap its growing potential. Lewis Tu, Director, DBTEL, says, “We plan to capture 20% of this market by the end of 2004.”
To start with, DBTEL will introduce a range of GSM mobiles. “We will launch right from the basic to the high-end mobiles,” adds he. It has signed up Chennai-based Munoth Communication, an Indian handset distributor, for its cellphones. The partner was into distribution of Siemens brand of mobile phones for the last three years.

DBTEL is still seeking new tie-ups with local service providers for distribution of its
cellphones.
“We do not believe in following the traditional national distribution style and will try to create our own network,” explains Lewis. He also informs that the company might consider opening an office in India.
DBTEL’s worldwide sale in 2002 was 4.5 million units and it expects to sell about 6 million units this year. “In our view, it is the right time to enter the potentially huge and fast-growing mobile phone market of India,” states Lewis.
