At the first DQ Week Awards event in Kolkata on September 4, leading IT resellers from cities and towns across the east
and north east were recognized and awarded, based on their size, growth, stability, commitment
and other parameters. The final awardees were selected by an industry and editorial panel.
Though the DQ Week IT Channel Awards are six years old in other locations, this was the first IT awards event to be held in
Kolkata by the CyberMedia group of nine-technology publication, a recognition of the change happening
in IT in the region in the past year.
In his Keynote address, chief guest West Bengal's Minister in Charge for IT Manabendra Mukherjee expressed his happiness
to see such an event in Kolkata, a city he promised would be a star on the IT horizon. He said that
India is beginning to recognize this, with various IT events being scheduled for the city and reiterating the importance of IT for his government said
that Kolkata was well on track toward becoming a strong IT services power, as well as a state with strong use of IT emerging
in e-governance and school education.
Speaking on the occasion, West Bengal's principal secretary (IT) Dr G D Gautama said that the perception problems affecting
the state were gradually fading, with major players like Wipro and IBM expanding and GE and others
coming in, and three new companies registering in the state each month. He also informed that West Bengal was "well and truly on the IT
expressway", with real estate development major DLF pumping in Rs 280 crore for an IT
park of 1.3 million sq ft at Rajarhat. CyberMedia's business publications group president Prasanto Kumar Roy
mentioned that in keeping with the 24 percent growth in the domestic market in 2003-04 - the first time in ten years the domestic market has overtaken
exports growth - the eastern market was seeing a spurt in IT channel activity, the IT channel 'hub' shifting from Delhi to Kolkata for the East
and North-East regions over 2003-04.
The awardees for cities other than Kolkata included First Infotech of
Agartala, Infocare Solution and Meltronix Services of Bhubaneswar, Infotech India of Guwahati, Galaxy Infosystem (for the third consecutive year) of
Jamshedpur, Computer Associates of Patna, Technocrat Infotech of Ranchi, Lifeline Enterprises of Shillong and Landmark Office Systems of
Siliguri.
The award for the Best Channel Partner of the North-East went to Sun Flower. For
Kolkata, the award for the most promising channel partner went to Syntech Informatics. Computer Exchange won the Best Retailer Award for
Kolkata, while the runner-up was Cyber Works.
The Best Systems Integrator award went to Wizer Technologies, while Diamond Infotech was adjudged the runner-up. The
Best Reseller award for Kolkata went to Suntronics Systems, while the runner up in this category was Alco
Infotech. The Best Sub-Distributor for Kolkata went to Supreme Technologies for the second consecutive year, while the runner up in this
category was Caltron.
