DVD media has caught on to the same trend that sometime ago was associated
with CD media – that of rapidly falling prices. Even though DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs
continue to sell at high price points, DVD media prices have fallen by 50
percent or more in the last two to three months time.
While the average price of a branded DVD media three months ago used to range
between Rs 800-850, today it is selling between Rs 400-425 a unit. This drop in
price is being attributed to the growing popularity of DVDs globally. Also
parallel imports of this media is considered to be another reason for the price
drop in India.

The sale of DVDs is also picking up gradually. Says Hasmukh Zaveri of Mumbai-based
21st Century, "While three months ago, we were selling just about 500 units
of DVDs, today we are selling as many as 2,500 a month." According to
Hasmukh, production houses are the major buying segment for DVD media.
The downward trend in price is expected to continue further. Says Devang Shah
of Crystal Impex, "I believe that by this year-end, DVDs would be selling
at prices of about Rs 250-300." Devang is also confident that the demand is
going to increase quite appreciably over the next few months.
