What are the challenges in the field of security today? Are there ways to meet these challenges?

Jayesh Shah - I would categorise the challenges in two parts – Technological & Non-Technological. Let’s look at the technological part first -

For more clarity of images, more megapixels are required, which in turn generates huge amount of data. This poses 2 problems – increase in computing power & storage space needs. While most of our day to day data storage has already gone to “The Cloud”, CCTV storage is still relegated to on-premise for most users. While the technology is available, the infra like – bandwidth, storage costs and technology cost itself is prohibitive. With the advent and penetration of 5G and fiber networks hopefully, these doors will open soon.

CCTV is a security system, but ironically, there is a question mark on the security of our CCTV footages. All major brands are Chinese (whether “manufactured” here or imported directly) who have their servers outside India. You cannot even comprehend the number of “eyes” they have here and the detailed information being available in real time to them. Very clear and strict enforcement of laws is required to ensure that this information does not fall into wrong hands.

Now, for the Non-Technical problems –

In the absence of any regulatory standards from the government regarding the qualifications of the installers and the quality of a CCTV systems to be installed, anything and everything is acceptable. The country is teeming with CCTV “Experts” and the result is sub-standard installations which help very little in solving crimes.

Second is the lack of awareness amongst users about the capabilities of modern CCTV systems in preventing a crime, rather than just recording it. Here, it is the duty of the industry to encourage adoption of such technologies by educating users. The government can pitch in by forming minimum standards of the systems.

How has the demand for security been from the MSMEs and from the large enterprises in last 2 years?

Jayesh Shah - In my experience, the demand for security solutions has been lukewarm as far as the MSMEs and larger Enterprises are concerned. This is primarily due to 2 reasons – The offices were shut and hence, there was no need for security solutions. To some extent, the need for security solutions in factories and industrial units did increase, but overall it was lukewarm. As far as the larger enterprises were concerned, understandably, security systems were not high on their CAPEX priority lists.

What are the security solutions most in demand?

Jayesh Shah - Today the most in demand solutions constitute Contact Less Access Control and Facial Recognition systems. For large installations, VMS solutions comprising of Video Analytics is also picking up. Also, there is a good demand for “Make in India” solutions which is very encouraging. People are willing to pay a bit more for Indian products.

What are the new directions in security solutions business?

Jayesh Shah - The future looks quite exciting. Once cloud storage becomes mainstream, just like the way Video Conferencing changed completely with the advent of Zoom, there will be a paradigm shift in the way security systems will be deployed. The hardware requirements will change completely and devices like DVRs and NVRs will not be required. Today, cameras are already supporting edge recording and basic analytics. They will stream data directly on to the cloud. Video Analytics will become mainstream. There will be a big upsurge in the requirement for software tools to analyse the “health” of the system, quickly audit the footage of the recordings, Parking Management Solutions, Crowd Management solutions etc.
