“RP2 System is just like any other battery, but supports an eight-hour power backing system. In places where there is power supply hardly for three to four hours, the battery could then be charged and once again run the system for an uninterrupted eight hours,” explained HCLI Chairman and CEO, Ajay
Chowdhary.

While the company initially plans to bundle the product with its desktop PCs, it wants to make it available for independent sale, but for HCL desktop owners only. The company expects that the bundling program would help it further consolidate its PC volume sale primarily in the SMB and home segment.

Ajay also informed that HCLI would soon launch the Microsoft Windows starter-edition with HCL desktops early in 2005. “We are closely working with Microsoft and intend to launch the same in February 2005. The starter-edition that is slightly cheaper than the conventional Windows OS also comes with additional features like video assistance for users to familiarize with the software easily,” he added.

The company has also partnered with the Union Bank to provide customers an easy monthly installment scheme for purchasing a HCL computer with a starting monthly payment of Rs 499. With the launch of RP2 and the easy pay option, particularly for low-end users, the company is eyeing a fair share of the market to be tapped.
