Eleven days after Microsoft unveiled tablet PC at a global launch in New
York, the first tablet PC was finally previewed in India by HP. Putting aside
all speculations, Ravi Swaminathan, Director, Personal Systems Group (PSG), HP
India showcased the Compaq Tablet PC TC1000 at a hurriedly called press
conference in New Delhi.
"The Tablet PC is a proof point to how HP sees the evolution of the PC
moving forward. HP is focused on keeping in tune with customers´ evolving
mobile needs and will continue to evaluate and develop products and technologies
that combine the optimal blend of reliability, performance and value that are
the hallmark of the HP tradition," he says.
Describing
the features of the new product, Ravi says that besides being wireless-enabled
and highly portable, the Compaq tablet PC also combines the power of digital
inking technologies in the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system with a
full-function PC. "It allows users to work in ways that are comfortable,
familiar and efficient without sacrificing the capabilities they have come to
expect with conventional Windows XP-based PCs," he added.
Combined with its innovative docking solution, a full-size keyboard and a
monitor, the Compaq Tablet PC is capable of transforming into a full-function
desktop PC. The flexible docking solution also allows users to place the Tablet
PC in a natural, comfortable position to write on the screen while at a desk.
According to Ravi, the tablet PC´s innovative design provides greater
flexibility that would help users accomplish common business tasks - taking
handwritten notes in a meeting for later reference or conversion to text,
annotating documents or presentations using digital ink, reading electronic
magazines or books or even discretely sending handwritten messages wirelessly
during meetings - more efficiently.
According to Ravi, HP would be targeting the large commercial enterprises in
the services, finance, medical, retailing and utilities segment for the product.
According to him, the tablet PC would be made available to customers shortly
through its 50 commercial mobile partners and 12 exclusive Compaq mobile stores
across India. The tablet PC is priced at Rs 1,49,990.
