He is young but has several feathers in his cap already. Nagpur-based Sudesh Bajaj runs a training institute and has dealerships in major brands. He is a retailer for AT&T and has a team for Web-based software development. And he wants to achieve much more by motivating his people to remain committed to their objectives.
Sudesh Bajaj had a cozy MNC job in the US after finishing his masters in electrical and computer architecture at UCLA, Los Angeles in 1992. But he could not resist the beckoning of the orange city, Nagpur. So he quit his job at Hughes Software to come back to his hometown in 1994.
On his return, Sudesh got into hotel business that his family had built up over the years. But the computer bug within him that was alive since his school days, led him to do his bachelors in electronics from YCCE College of Engineering and drove him towards computer education. He became a franchisee of Asset International in 1997.
But computer education was only a starting point. Soon he was into bigger things with Micron Network Computing, which he started to take up networking projects. Some of Nagpur's top corporates have availed Sudesh's services to put in place their networks. These include, South Eastern Railway, Ascent Medical Transcript Ltd, IQ Software Development, Hyundai Unitech Ltd, L&T, HPCL and many others in the SME segment.
Simultaneously, Sudesh went for dealerships. His first brand was HCL. Then came HP and Epson. The latest business that he has got into is retailing for AT&T. "I see a high potential for growth," says a demure
Sudesh.
Software as a growth area
The growth is already happening at a fast pace. During 1999-00, Micron achieved a turnover of Rs 4.2 crore which was 100 percent more than the previous year. Software contributed 18 percent of this revenue which Sudesh expects to go up substantially this year with total turnover target being set at around Rs 7
crore.
Looking at the past history, the turnover target looks quite achievable especially because of the focus on software development. Sudesh has started a separate company called Micron Connect to deal in web designing and software development. He has a young and committed team to take up Web-based projects. Says Sudesh, "We have bagged some good contracts of software exports to the US."
The software team has also developed the expertise in web site designing and has carried out jobs for several leading companies in Nagpur. With every business getting on to the Net, Micron is looking forward to more revenue in this area.
Micron work culture
Sudesh has built up an informal yet disciplined approach at his workplace. In fact, he has formalized this working environment by prominently displaying the Micron work culture in his office which reads: "Informal, disciplined, free, frank and fair, service oriented; committed to objectives."
The commitment of his employees is reflected in the quick growth that Micron has achieved in a short span. Sudesh now wants to develop and use this commitment for his future plans, which include customer relationship management areas like call centers, which he feels, will see high growth. He also sees a lot of potential in medical transcription.
