Focus on the enterprise business segment seems to have helped Ingram Micro

India to forge a huge growth for itself in 2007-08. The company posted a

turnover of an estimated Rs 8,620 crore last fiscal, up from Rs 6,068 crore in

2006-07.

The company witnessed a strong growth in its consumer PC and enterprise

business. To beef up its enterprise offerings, it tied up with Netgear, Autodesk,

Adobe, Business Objects, VMware, D-Link, Hitachi, NetApp, Tandberg Data, etc in

the last year. Ingram also got into the Point of Sale business previous fiscal

and tied up with Zebra Technologies for their thermal printers and Printronix as

well as Wyse and Symbol.

The enterprise business brought in 20 percent to the company's overall

turnover. Ironically, Ingram's consumer business saw the maximum 30 percent.

What makes this growth unusual is the fact that the distribution house

discontinued selling LG products that were a mainstay in this segment. At the

same time, Ingram became the national distributor for Toshiba laptops, which

balanced the loss of LG.

45 percent of the company's revenues came from its systems business, while

components and peripherals brought in 18 and 16 percent, respectively. Software

business chipped in another 14 percent. Ingram has always been viewed as a giant

company, which does not have the pulse of the channel though. In a bid to get

closer to partners, the company initiated vendor-specific training sessions for

brands like Fortinet and Red Hat.
