Intel is working on chips for enhancing the performance of Mobile Internet
Devices (MIDs), namely the handheld devices and mobile phones, which are
Internet-enabled. Prakash Bagri, Director of OEM business-Intel India, said that
the new chips would be on a platform, which will enhance the performance of
handheld devices, which are internet-enabled.
"The new platform will be similar to that of 'Stealey' is being
developed keeping in mind the users experiences and expectations, such as better
connectivity, and longer battery-life. We had kept the user expectations as a
benchmark, even when we came out with the Dual Core processors. Now that the
more and more mobile users log-on to the internet, the platform will be in tune
with their expectations," he said.
Bagri said that Intel preferred to term Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) as it
was not only through the mobile phone, but also other handheld devices, which
the users browse the Internet. "If required we will also add some GSM
features to the new platform," he said.
"We will announce the launch of the chips with the new platform in due
course of time," he said when asked about the launch of the processors in
Indian subcontinent.
As may be recalled, the company had unveiled the MID platform at the Beijing
Intel Developer Forum, in April this year. However, it did not specify the
availability of the platform in the market. The MIDs are targeted at consumers
and professionals, it is learnt.
