Here are the facts issued by WHO as myth busters to clear some misconceptions circulating in the social media and among the people -

  • Hand sanitisers can be used often as they don't build resistance in germs against them
  • Alcohol-based sanitisers are safe for everyone to use as they are not allergic to skin in most people, don't produce dryness and dermatitis etc.
  • Alcohol-based sanitisers can be used in religions where alcohol is prohibited - WHO has issued a special note to say that the Quran permits the use of alcohol for medicinal purposes
  • It is safer to frequently clean your hands and not wear gloves, as gloves can actually transmit germs from one surface to another
  • Touching a communal bottle of alcohol-based sanitiser will not infect you as the probability of germs transmitting through the bottle is very low after you sanitise your hands
  • An alcohol-based handrub is listed as a WHO essential medicine
  • The amount of alcohol-based sanitiser you use matters - it should be 60% or more of ethyl alcohol
  • Clinical trials confirm that hydroxychloroquine does not prevent illness or death from COVID-19

  • Vitamin and mineral supplements cannot cure COVID-19 - they build the immunity system of the body, but don't ensure prevention of Corona virus infection

  • Dexamethasone (Corticosteroids) should be prescribed only as a treatment for those COVID-19 patients who need it. It should not be stockpiled and given to all patients. For some COVID-19 patients on ventilators, a daily 6 mg dose of dexamethasone for 10 days improved their health

  • People should NOT wear masks while exercising as it can produce low oxygen levels and sweat can induce growth of germs

  • Water or swimming does not transmit the COVID-19 virus. However, you are advised to maintain social distance and not swim in places where you may get close to other swimmers

  • The likelihood of shoes spreading COVID-19 is very low

  • The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a virus, NOT by bacteria. There is currently no licensed medication to cure COVID-19. If you have symptoms, call your health care provider or COVID-19 hotline for assistance
  •  The prolonged use of medical masks when properly worn, DOES NOT cause CO2 intoxication nor oxygen deficiency.

  • By far, the only way to protect against Corona virus is to stay away from other people, use masks while going out and inside the house if you're living in a family environment, wash your hands for 20 sec frequently, use sanitisers and contact the doctor if you have any symptoms. To build immunity you can take lime juice, drink milk with ghee and turmeric, take black pepper and garlic etc, but remember that these won't prevent Corona infection. While taking precautions against Corona, you must take care of these myth busters.
