Before the end of the tenure of the present Assembly, all the 230 MP legislators would get laptops as a parting gift from the state government. The decision, taken a couple of years ago on the lines of Andhra Pradesh, is in the final stage of implementation. According to sources, the law and legislative department had mooted the proposal to provide laptops to the legislators three years back. However, it did not move due to financial constraints. Some officers even raised doubts over the efficacy of potential users of the gadget.
Recently, the state government had organized training for legislators to make them computer-savvy. That has revived the idea of giving laptops to the MLAs. Sources in Mantralaya said that MLAs would receive the 'gift' before promulgation of the model code of conduct, which is likely in September this year. "The issue of providing computers to the MLAs is under consideration," confirmed a senior officer dealing with the issue. "MLAs would be provided laptops as per the State Government's decision soon after getting a nod from the Finance department," the officer added. This kind of a proposal is unlikely to be blocked by the department, a Finance department officer quipped.
