Glass Ceilings

Simran Mulchandani, Proprietor, Aarvee Infoservices handles the finances and administration of Aarvee along with running several service centres and managing her household responsibilities. In an interaction with us, she narrated her experiences of workplace as a woman and about the idea of glass ceilings in the IT sector. Following is her narrative in her own words -

IT for sure is a male dominated industry. In the financial capital of India i.e., Mumbai , I am right now running service centres for brands with 100% male domination, I am the only woman owner in both businesses for years. I also had some short stint with other brands,  but again an only woman entrepreneur.

Now, when I say this, it appears as if my work experiences must have been very tough and initially, it was awkward for me to sit surrounded with all men in the long conferences. So to be frank, I did feel awkward in the beginning, but I can say from my experiences that men of our generation have been very supportive of women who are here to make a difference.

From managers of my parent companies to the co-owners of our businesses, I feel more of privileged the way they handle me. Moreover, I would like to give one word of wisdom to the coming generation of woman enterpreneurs to always maintain your distance and dignity, that is only and only in our hand. No one can cross their limits if we have our strong lines drawn, but still we can be confident and smiling.

I would like to highlight the pros of being a woman below -

I personally believe in seeing the world with a positive attitude.

It is often said that girls face glass ceilings in the industry, but whichever brand I have been associated with, I have been very crisp and clear in my communication at first go, that running authorised service centres is all about performance. This industry gives you rewards on performance; if I ensure and deliver performance I get growth, no glass ceiling for us and never let such thoughts bring you down.

I believe a woman leader is more sensitive to customers as well as staff and thus gives out better results in an industry like ours.

After all, sales service, or authorised service centres is a segment which works on customer satisfaction. And I truly believe that all company officials and managers and respective owners do not even hear or see the customers. Our staff members are the face and voice of the brand , so keeping them happy ensures happy customers. It's not about glass ceilings; it's about delivering the performance that keeps the clients happy.

So with an honest attitude, dignity and a focus on team welfare, I believe success can be achieved

I have been in this industry for 30 years at an age of 46, so my journey started very early at16 years. I passed out of 10th and started work as an coordinator for an IT products company. From there I made my own service centre back in 2000 and here I have a legacy of 30 years in the industry. So with an honest attitude, dignity and a focus on team welfare, I believe success can be achieved.
