Oracle India Pvt. Ltd (Oracle India) has launched the Oracle
Database 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE), a free, starter edition of
its database software.
Indian companies can now download a beta version of Oracle
Database XE.
This new edition offers developers, database administrators (DBAs)
and students a free starter database to develop and deploy their applications.
It is also freely available for independent software vendors (ISVs) and hardware
vendors to distribute or embed with their applications and products.
Oracle Database XE is built on the Oracle Database 10g
Release 2 code base and is fully compatible with the family of Oracle Database
products. It is available on 32-bit Linux and Windows
operating systems and can be installed on any supported hardware platform.
As a free, starter database, Oracle Database XE uses at most
one CPU or dual core of processing capability, memory usage is kept below 1GB
and stores up to 4GB of data. If the company's database usage grows beyond
this, the company also provides clear migration and upgradation path to higher
version.
Speaking on the occasion, Oracle Corporation Asia Pacific database pre-sales
senior director VG Sundar Ram said, "With this edition, the company is
targeting the developer community who works on different technologies to use
Oracle products as backend database of choice. We are also targeting the
educational institutions for inclusion of
this edition in the curriculum. We are also partnering with ISVs and hardware
players to bundle this software with their product."
