Red Hat to debut Enterprise Linux 3

Red Hat India has announced that its Enterprise Linux 3 platform with a new 'Open Source Architecture', will released by December-end 2003. The company is looking at its ISV partners, OEM partners and the open source community to play an important role to broaden the options for solutions based on this technology.

This new platform has the native POSIX threading library, which provides significant performance improvement for multi-threading applications. Scalability improvements include support for larger SMP, memory and I/O configurations. 


The device's single code base improves code stability, maintainability and security. Its seven supported hardware architectures include Intel x86 and Itanium, AMD64, IBM zSeries, iSeries, pSeries, and S/390. 

The new 'Open Source Architecture' allows for two additional layers of middleware and application environments. Red Hat Cluster Suite, Developer Suite, Portal Server and Content Management System will make up the solution stack on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Platform.

The product will come in 10 international languages. It is available as a part of an annual subscription that includes Red Hat Network and support services. 

Says Javed Tapia, Director - India, Red Hat, "The new Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 will form the platform for our Open Source Architecture. This will create a focal point for our development efforts and strategic business activities." 

The new Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, comprises Enterprise Linux AS (for database/CRM, mission-critical applications), Enterprise Linux ES (edge-of-network applications such as file/print, mail and web servers) and Enterprise Linux WS (enterprise desktop and technical workstation).

The pricing of various Red Hat editions are Enterprise Linux (Intel x86) at Rs 74,950; Linux AS 3 Standard (IPF)(64-bit), Enterprise Linux AS 3 Standard (AMD)(64-bit) and Linux AS 3 Standard (IBM i series) each at Rs 99,600; Enterprise Linux Cluster for Rs 25,000; Linux Professional Workstation at Rs 3,250; Network Proxy Service at Rs 2,50,000; while Network Satellite Service comes for Rs 12,50,000.
