Threats such as ransomware continue to become more sophisticated and aggressive, presenting challenges for security teams everywhere. According to the 1H 2022 FortiGuard Labs Threat Landscape report, the number of new ransomware variants identified in the year's first half increased by nearly 100% compared to the previous six-month period. “We’re seeing adversaries upping their game,” remarked Jonas Walker, Security Strategist, FortiGuard Labs. “Adversaries, aren’t discriminating which industry they are targeting but when successful, are not only holding data for ransom but exfiltrating it and using automation to increase the breadth of attack.” In Indian FortiGuard Labs Threat Intelligence has tracked over 42.94 Billion IPS detections this year out of which 310 Million were critical vulnerabilities using Log4J impacting every environment with Java applications. There were over 18 million end point vulnerabilities deducted so organisations need to make significant investments in EDR and endpoint response agents. “This is why threat intelligence is so critical,” he continued. “If you aren’t aware that there are bad actors and what their latest methods are, you can be the next victim. Cybercriminals have thrived in this remote and hybrid work environment as organizations sped up their digital transformation but leave open security gaps.”

Vishak Raman, Vice President of Sales, India, SAARC, and Southeast Asia, Fortinet, spoke about the need to reduce the complexity of security processes and tools and recommended consolidating technologies as much as possible to simplify operations. He said, “As workplace goes hybrid, organisations are experiencing significant security gaps, particularly if they don’t have the right security architecture and talent in place. Even when they do, many organizations struggle to integrate these solutions with the rest of their security architecture. Siloed security systems can make it difficult for IT teams to create and maintain cohesive visibility across their infrastructure. To reduce complexity, organizations need to build a security architecture where all tools are integrated under a single ecosystem to deliver centralized visibility, share intelligence, automate threat response, and streamline security management. This “mesh” should extend to all parts of the infrastructure - public and private clouds, edge and IoT resources, OT infrastructure, and on-premises services. It should include all aspects of security management, threat detection and response, compliance reporting and policy management.”
