SGI launches Linux-based visual computer systems

Silicon Graphics Systems (SGI) India unveiled a high performance Linux-based

a product line of visual computing system known as Silicon Graphics Prism. They

are built around Intel Itanium 2 processors and open source-based operating

system - 64-bit Linux. It provides interactivity for visualization for better

decisions to be taken and provide better results.

The Prism has four configurations. They are Deskside, Power, Team and

Extreme. Deskside is the entry level products, wherein a user does not have to

shift from a normal PC to a high computing one. He can use the Deskside Prism.

The Numaflex architecture makes the Prism modular and scalable. It also has ATI

FireGL graphics processors.

These

products are mainly targeted at government and defense, manufacturing units,

media and life sciences segments. It can be widely used in bioinformatics,

molecular modeling and several other scientific fields. "Our channel

strategy consists of tier 1 and tier 2 partners. There are four tier 1 partners

like Tata Elxsi, CMC, PCS. They take care of SGI's strategic accounts, while

tier 2 partners take care of mid-market clients.

The company plans to recruit more tier 2 partners to take the Prism product

line in B- and C- class cities," commented Prasad Medury, MD of SGI. Tier 1

partners have a strong SGI touch, while tier two partners have a lower company

touch. For post sales, the company is yet to decide the strategy for its

non-strategic customers. These cost of these computer systems begin at $10,000.
