SMC Networks launches 10G stackable switches

SMC Networks has launched SMC8724ML3 and SMC8748ML3

TigerStack 1000 stackable 24 and 48-port Layer 3 managed Gigabit ethernet

switches. The SMC8748ML3 switch has 48 fixed 10/100/1000 ports, while the

SMC8724ML3 has 24.

In each of the switches, four of the ports can be upgraded

with optional mini GBIC expansion slots for fibre connections. An optional

one-port 10 Gigabit XENPAK module can be added to either of the switches for 10G

uplink. The SMC8748ML3 and SMC8724ML3 race have a switching capacity of 156Gbps

for the 48-port switch, 108Gbps for the 24-port version.

These new switches deliver ACLs and 802.1x for secure network

access, and SSH, SSL/HTTPS for secure management enabled by Radius and Tacacs+.

Flexible Layer 2/3/4 traffic prioritization and rate-limiting enable quality of

service (QoS) across the network, and network segmentation is provided by port

and protocol-based VLANs.

For more powerful management applications, these new

TigerStack 10/100/1000 switches also offer multiple spanning tree protocol

(802.1s) and stack-wide link aggregation (LACP). Built for robust workgroup and

backbone switching today, the SMC8748ML3 and SMC8724ML3 can be mixed or matched

for stacking up to eight units high, and have the flexibility to allow for

upgrades to even more features that will be released in the future.

Every SMC8700 series stackable switch has its own SMMP module

or supervisory module. Besides, in a stackable arrangement only one SNMP module

works at a time and takes care of entire stack's Layer 2 switching, Layer 3

routing and all SNMP managed functions.

The design of stackable switch has a built-in redundancy SNMP

module unlike that of a chassis switch wherein a redundancy supervisory module

has to be bought separately. So, if the primary SNMP module fails, the secondary

SNMP module takes over. Every 10G switch in the stack has a built-in power

supply and an option for redundant power supply as well.

The SMC8724ML3 and SMC8748ML3 TigerStack 1000 stackable 24

and 48-port Layer 3 managed gigabit ethernet Switches are available at $3,500

and $5,200.
