SonicWall announced that it has acquired email security company MailFrontier for a consideration of approximately $31 million in an all cash transaction. The purchase of the latter enables SonicWall to bring email security to channel partners and their end users as part of its end-to-end suite of secure content protection.

MailFrontier's customers will benefit from the integration of SonicWall's secure content management (SCM) and unified threat management (UTM) capabilities, while SonicWall's distributed enterprise customers will have access to a further range of offerings for the mid-market.

Palo Alto, California-based MailFrontier is a privately-held company providing email security and compliance solutions to the mid-enterprise market. Its products protect organizations against inbound and outbound email threats such as spam, viruses and phishing, and provide policy enforcement and control to achieving regulatory compliance and corporate governance.

The acquisition supports SonicWall's commitment to creating profitable opportunities for its channel partners by offering them an integrated set of products and subscription services that provide powerful, simple alternatives to complex technology. Its global network of 10,000 solution providers will benefit from the ability to sell an even broader range of products and services from a single supplier that understands the unique requirements of small and mid-enterprise companies.

The MailFrontier Gateway platform provides a foundation for continued development of security solutions and enables SonicWALL's managed services partners to deliver a hosted email security platform to their end customers.

Anne Bonaparte, President and CEO, MailFrontier, said, "End users are increasingly concerned about protection of content on outbound email paths for regulatory compliance and corporate governance requirements. Our combined technology strengths and distribution breadth will enhance the comprehensive security solutions we are able to offer our customers."
