Sun to set up next-gen lab in Bangalore

The Indian engineering center of Sun Microsystems has been doing some
prolific work in developing some of the company's key products and solutions
in the last five years of its existence in India. The center, which has over a
thousand engineers, has contributed around 220 patents over the last five years.

Come December, this center, which is incidentally the second biggest hub for
the company, is all set to run on steroids! Sun is investing in a showcase lab
that would power the R&D center through utility computing and grid
technologies in Bangalore. “We are in the process of setting up a virtually
managed and consolidated data center which will have virtualization and RFID for
asset management,” said Vijay Anand, VP, India Engineering center, Sun
Microsystems India. RFID would be deployed to track and monitor the center's
3000-odd servers and ancillary systems like storage. In addition, Anand this
would also help in STPI compliance.

He did not reveal the amount of investment going into the center.

Around 3000 sq feet of space has been allotted for the lab, which will come
up in the same building that houses the company's current engineering center
in Bangalore.

Anand said that this would be the company's first integrated next
generation lab of its kind. Sun is hoping that the lab would boost the
productivity of the engineering center. The company is also hoping to replicate
this lab concept at its R&D center in the Bay Area, USA.

Besides powering development work, the lab would also serve as a showcase for
Sun's advanced technologies for prospective customers, informed Anand.

The Indian center is doing work on various areas such as software and systems
management, Java, NAS and SAN storage software, application server, web server,
portal server, Solaris OS, to name a few.
