Accton gears up for VDSL products

Accton India is gearing up to launch VDSL (voice digital subscriber line) and HomePlug products in the country. This is part of the company's 'Less Wire' strategy, which will concentrate on products that use the existing infrastructure of an organization or wireless technology. HomePlug is an industry standard, wherein the networking products will use the existing electrical powerline to provide high-bandwidth to home and small office users.

VDSL promises much higher data rates over relatively short distances (between 51 and 55 Mbps over lines up to 1,000 feet or 300 meters in length). It is used as the final drop from a fiber optic junction point to nearby customers.

Milind Kamat is enthused about entry of Accton's VDSL products Accton's VDSL products include modems, splitters, concentrators and switches. The HomePlug kit, on the other hand, will include an adapter, PC card and an Ethernet port. The products will cost almost Rs 20,000 per port. These high-bandwidth products will help users to get video and audio-on-demand, as well as other bandwidth-hungry applications.

These products are targeted at niche segments like hotels, banks and defense establishments. Admitting that the launch of VDSL products is ahead of their time, Milind Kamath says, "We are sure this is where the market is going to shift. And we would like to make our presence felt in the affordable high-bandwidth segment, so that when the market takes off, we will be the first point-of-reference for buyers."

Viren Bhavishi, an Accton distributor, is pretty excited about the entry of VDSL products in India. Says he, "Though it might be a little early for the technology in the country, I am sure there will be quite a few takers for it. And as a distributor, it always makes sense to take on newer products as these translate into better margins for us."

This sentiment was echoed by another Chennai-based dealer who claimed that it was high time technologies like VDSL were adopted in India. However he was not very sure how many buyers there would be for networking products of this genre.
