China continues to play an increasingly important role in
Taiwan’s IT hardware production, according to DigiTimes report based on the
Market Intelligence Center (MIC) statistics in Taiwan. Statistics showed that
the ratio of Taiwan’s IT production value generated from China rose from 36.9
percent in 2001 to 51 percent in the first half of 2002.
The significant growth was boosted by rising shipments of
high-price products, such as LCD monitors and notebook computers in China this
year, according to a report by Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) quoting MIC
analysts’ comments.
In terms of actual production, LCD monitor and notebook
makers are seen to be the most aggressive in transferring their operations to
overseas bases, especially to China.
In 2000, only three percent of Taiwan’s LCD monitors were
produced outside Taiwan, but the ratio has surged remarkably to 71 percent in
the first half of this year, of which 61 percent originates from China.

Taiwan’s notebook production ratio in China has also jumped
from zero in 2000, 5.2 percent in 2001 to 24 percent in the first half of this
year.
Other IT products’ production ratios in China did not
experience such significant growth, as many manufacturers in these sectors
already moved most of their operations to China over the past few years.
