Infrastructure Development

A significant factor in seamless transportation and timely delivery of cargo is the construction and routine maintenance of roads, railways, ports, and airports. Initiatives such as the Bharatmala Project and Sagarmala Project were implemented by the Indian government to improve road and port connectivity. These initiatives ensure the efficiency of freight movement and reduce transportation costs, thereby benefiting the logistics industry in India.

Tax Reforms

In 2017, the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) had a profound impact on the Indian logistics industry. Replacing several central and state taxes with a single tax eliminated interstate checkpoints and reduced the complexities of taxation. This unified tax structure has successfully streamlined freight movement throughout the country, resulting in shorter turnaround times and higher cost savings for logistics firms. Further, tax reforms implemented by the government along with the adoption of electronic documentation, such as the e-way bill system, have encouraged the strengthening of warehouses and distribution centers, refining supply chain operations.

Growth of E-commerce and Digitisation

The drastic growth of the e-commerce industry in India has necessitated the development of policies to support the logistics industry. To facilitate the adoption of technology in logistics operations, the government has taken steps to promote digitalization with initiatives such as the Digital India campaign. Additionally, the promotion of online platforms for logistics services has enabled better tracking of shipments, thereby improving transparency and increasing efficiency in last-mile delivery. These measures have not only benefitted e-commerce companies but also traditional logistics providers, enabling them to offer more competitive services.

Skill Development and Training

Skilled manpower is a major contributor to the growth of the logistics industry in the country. To address the sector’s labor shortage and enrich workforce quality, the government has implemented policies focusing on skill development and training. Several programs have been introduced as part of National Skill Development Corporation schemes to provide training in areas such as warehouse management, supply chain optimization, and transportation management.

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and Skill India Mission have been instrumental in imparting industry-relevant skills to individuals and improving their employability in the logistics sector. These initiatives have helped create a pool of skilled professionals, thereby improving the overall efficiency and productivity of the logistics sector.

Warehousing and Cold Storage Infrastructure

To address the warehousing infrastructure gap, the government launched the National Logistics Portal in 2023 and the National Logistics Policy in 2022. These initiatives aim to create a robust ecosystem by promoting the development of integrated logistics parks, improving storage and handling facilities, and encouraging private sector participation.

Similarly, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana has been instrumental in promoting the development of cold chain infrastructure for perishable goods. This has enabled farmers to reduce post-harvest losses and increase their incomes. The increased availability of cold storage facilities has also facilitated the growth of the food processing industry.
