Sanjay Prasad’s interest in IT goes back a long way. When he was a commerce student at Mumbai's HR College, he would dabble in family business which dealt in modems, fax machines, color copiers etc.

Trading was always in Sanjay’s veins. His experience in dealing with customers helped him understand their needs and develop the right marketing strategies in his own venture which he started in Bangalore in 1997 with another associate.

Sanjay invested Rs 5 lakh in his venture and called it ITM Computers. Reminiscing about the early days, says Sanjay, "The 1997—98 period was the golden era for the Internet in India and being associated with IT at such a stage was a gift that I couldn’t have resisted."

Alliances that worked magic

Initially ITM started operations with five employees, which has grown to become 15 with three service engineers who man the help desk round the clock.

The tie-up with Motorola was the biggest milestone for both Sanjay and ITM Computers. "I still remember the day I signed up with Motorola for dealership of their modems. I still treasure my association with Rajeev Verma who was then head of Sales and Marketing for Motorola," says Sanjay.

This association proved to be helpful when ITM decided to tie up with Convergent Technologies. Currently ITM Computers is the authorized distributor and support center for Motorola’s Internet and Networking Group via their national partner Convergent Communications.

Following this alliance, there was simply no looking back for Sanjay. "Our largest venture has been a tie-up with US-based Sitara Networks for its QOSworks for bandwidth management," says Sanjay.

QOSworks is an integrated QOS platform that enables enterprises, ASPs and service providers to deploy new e-business applications while protecting critical application performance and improving network efficiency.

"We also promote and actively distribute products of Patton Electronics which include leased line modem, HDSL, DSL, & XDSL," says Sanjay, "We also distribute their remote access servers, which are extensively used in today’s emerging

VPN."

Superior service with controlled costs

Sanjay feels that luck coupled with hard work and dedication, helped ITM to work out great deals. Today ITM has recorded a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 66 percent within a span of three years. In 1999-2000, the company registered a turnover of Rs 2.2 crore. "With this new feather in our cap, our target for the current year is Rs 4 Crore," says Sanjay. To achieve this, Sanjay plans to branch out to Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Bombay and Delhi.

Some of the clients of ITM Computers include Times Bank, Spice Telecom, BPL, Verifone, Canara Bank, Vyasya Bank, Vijaya Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank, State Bank of India, DHL, IL&FS, Titan Industries, Scotia Bank and IBM.

Sanjay feels that a well-managed network needs able management. "Routers are not plug and play devices. Sales and services of routers requires lot of technical know-how, dedication and hardwork," says Sanjay.

This is precisely why he believes in providing service and support with controlled costs and a comprehensive service policy. He is also on the look out for dealers in Goa, Mangalore and Shimoga to promote networking products at a larger scale.
