twitter ban

On February 25, the government had announced tighter rules for social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, requiring them to remove any content flagged by authorities within 36 hours and setting up a robust complaint redressal mechanism with a nodal officer being based in the country. The platforms had received 3 motnhs to follow these guidelines, failing which they faced the possibility of being banned in India. The 3 months period ends today on 26th of May.

However, the experts are of the opinion that since removal of posts is illegal against the democratic right of Freedom of Expression, the social media platforms can go to court if pressurised and the government wouldn't like to be embarrassed in court. Further, the government wouldn't want to go against the American-origin giant platforms and be on the wrong side of international diplomacy. Hence, the possibility of ban on social media is not likely to be imposed. Indeed, all social media platforms continue to function till the time of writing.

Further, Twitter has has exploded with viral jokes about the news of the possibility of ban on these platforms. Here are some hilarious samples collected by DQ Channels from Twitter -

To make matters worse, coastal India has been facing one severe cyclone after another. Today as this post is being written, Orissa is facing the landfall of a severe Yaas cyclone. In these times, such moments of hilariousness are needed to lift the mood.
